It is with great pleasure that the 9th World Endodontic Congress is held under the auspices of the Japan Endodontic Association at the Tokyo International Forum for four days from May 23 to 26, 2013. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation for all the support and cooperation you have kindly extended us in preparing this Congress.
Needless to say, it is international cooperation and competition that serve as the driving force for progress and development in every academic discipline. Since its foundation in 1980, the Japan Endodontic Association has focused on coalition and interaction with the international organizations that represent the endodontic society in each country. The most representative of these partners includes the International Federation of Endodontic Associations (IFEA), American Association of Endodontists (AAE), Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation (APEC), and Korean Academy of Endodontics (KAE). On the basis of such fundamental principles, the Japan Endodontic Association had been working to host this triennial World Congress of the IFEA in Japan. In the 1990s, we launched a campaign to invite this Congress to Kobe, which did not come true. However, our efforts bore fruit in the 2000s, and it was decided by vote at the General Assembly of the 7th World Endodontic Congress, held in Vancouver (Canada) in 2007, that the 9th World Endodontic Congress in 2013 would be held in Tokyo. This is the first time that this Congress takes place in Asia, meaning our long-cherished wish is fulfilled.
Against the backdrop of this time period, Japan was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 and is still in the process of recovering from tremendous damage. Fortunately, we have received a lot of papers of high quality and pre-registrations for attendance, thanks to considerable international cooperation from speakers invited from abroad, lecturers for the Pre-congress Course, and representatives from each country.
We hope that, during these mild spring days, all the participants can attentively listen to and experience the science and technology of the world's most advanced endodontic treatments. As Japan is sometimes referred to as a country of “equality and hospitality,” we are confident that attendees from overseas will fully enjoy a pleasant stay in Japan.
Before closing, we would like to mention that the Congress incorporates the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting of the JEA and the 11th Joint Scientific Meeting between the KAE and JEA, and receives sponsorships from the: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, Science Council of Japan, Japan Dental Association, Tokyo Dental Association, Japanese Association for Dental Science, Council of Japan Dental Science of Societies, Japanese Society of Conservative Dentistry, Japanese Society of Periodontology，and Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau. Last but not least, we would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped organize this Congress.
