Creating New Trends for Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Failure
―Integration of Basic Science, Clinical Research and Medical Practice —

Chairperson: Masafumi Kitakaze (National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center)
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is triggered by the multiple CV risk factors, culminates in heart failure (HF), a common and final features of CVD. Despite the trend of decreases in prevalence of HF in the US and Europe, the prevalence of HF increases in Japan. Although we need other novel drugs or procedures for the treatment of HF, the fruitful results of basic research have not been necessarily transferred to the development of the new drugs or procedures performed by the academia or pharmaceutical/device companies. Therefore, the tight linkage between basic, TR and clinical researchers and developers of medical drugs/device has been recognized to be necessary. Basic researches should provide the evidence of novel neurohumoral factors in HF, the involvement of failure of other organs such as kidney and lung, cell and gene therapy and the new devices such as TAVR and mitral clips to contribute to the treatment of HF. Furthermore, we need to create new infrastructure to test these ideas in the clinical setting as a new standard in Japanese style clinical investigations. In this session, we would like to find the seeds to create new drugs or devises for HF treatment beyond the global trends. Furthermore, we would like to discuss how to conquer “the death valley” to transfer the results of basic research to the clinical practice in cardiovascular Medicine.
