Exploration of a Possibility of Better Strategy for Treating Aortic Pathologies

Chairpersons: Hideyuki Shimizu (Keio University School of Medicine)
Kimihiro Komori (Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine)
A large aortic aneurysm has a potential risk of aortic rupture when it is left untreated. Open surgery, or removing the weakened section and replacing it with a graft of artificial material, has been the exclusive definite treatment of an aortic aneurysm up until short ago. In recent years, endovascular aortic repair using a stent-graft has been widespread. Various innovative surgical procedures such as several kinds of hybrid aortic repairs, or endovascular aortic repair plus debranching and reconstruction of branch vessels, have been also developed for treating complex aortic pathologies. Thus strategy for treating aortic pathologies is changing. In addition, many interesting basic researches are being carried out regarding pathology, biomarkers and therapeutic agents of aortic aneurysm and dissection. The achievements of them might be of great help in clinical settings.
The purposes of this session are to enhance information share of cutting-edge achievement of basic research as well as front-line therapy for aortic pathology and to explore a possibility of better strategy for treating aortic pathologies.
