(8) Revolutional Strategy for Heart Failure Prevention

Chairperson: Yusuke Ohya (Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Nephrology and Neurology, University of the Ryukyus)
Koichi Node (Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Saga University)

Strategies to prevent heart failure may not be clearly divided into those for primary prevention and those for secondary prevention, therefore, seamless prevention management from stage A, the premature stage, to stage D, the severe heart failure, is essential. Heart failure severely affects vital prognosis and quality of life, but its cause and pathology are diverse, and there are limits to the therapeutic efficiency with conventional methods. It is urgent to develop a groundbreaking medical therapy that follows drug therapy such as ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, aldosterone antagonists, non-pharmacological treatment such as CRT, cardiac transplantation, and regenerative therapy. From the standpoint of prevention, risk factor management, new device by nanomachine, and social intervention such as social network, or heart failure management by ICT, is highly expected. In this symposium, facing the medical circumstances of our country and the upcoming future “heart failure pandemic” that awaits Japan, I would like to introduce the approaches and researches that may lead us to new prevention method that arrest the onset of heart failure.
