(3) The Recent Advances in the Assessment of Valvular Heart Diseases with Imaging Modalities

Chairperson: Kazuhiro Yamamoto (Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Tottori University)
Paul Sorajja (Minneapolis Heart Institute, USA)

The number of patients with degenerative or functional valvular heart diseases has been increasing with aging of the society, which has led to the increased number of heart failure patients and to the worsening of heart failure. The assessment of valvular heart diseases is required for various purposes, e.g., to clarify the mechanisms and/or pathophysiology, to estimate the severity, to choose the therapeutic strategy with the perspective of its benefits and risks, and to evaluate the effects of the therapy. The degenerative valvular heart diseases induce myocardial injury which strongly affects the prognosis and the choice of therapeutic strategy. Functional valvular heart diseases are usually secondary to ventricular dysfunction. An important role of the function of right-sided heart in the left-sided valvular heart diseases has been emphasized. The assessment of valvular heart diseases includes structural and functional evaluation of valve, each chamber of the heart, the pulmonary artery and the aorta, and requires their comprehensive interpretation. Therefore, it is often necessary to obtain information from multiple modalities, i.e., echocardiography, CT and MRI, and novel analytic methods of each imaging modality provide additive information. In this session, we would like to discuss recent advances in imaging analyses for the comprehensive assessment of valvular heart diseases
