Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent in Japan, and is an important risk factor with prognostic significance. In recent years, several new classes of hypoglycemic agents were developed; however, optimal treatment strategies have not been yet established to prevent cardiovascular complications of diabetes mellitus, particularly heart failure.
Furthermore, management of the super-elder diabetic patients is an emerging issue in the rapidly aging societies like Japan.
In this symposium, we would discuss the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular complications of diabetes mellitus based on the pathophysiologic understanding.
