Fukuoka hosts the annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN) for the first time in 36 years in Fukuoka. It is our great pleasure to welcome you in Fukuoka, the center city in the Western Japan.

JSN has ceaselessly contributed to studies and public education on nephrology over the past half a century. Nevertheless, it has become evident that various chronic disabilities generally defined as chronic kidney disease (CKD) induce not only renal dysfunction but also serious complications including cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Today, extensive efforts to combat CKD are exerted on a global level. JSN has established the Japan Association for CKD Initiative (JCKDI), which has been carrying out activities in cooperation with related organizations to date. Although a part of its activities has been reported in the 50th Annual Meeting of the JSN, recent harvests will be presented at our annual meeting.

The majority of CKD is based on the lifestyle-related diseases and the metabolic syndrome, which have recently been drawing keen public attention. An unhealthy lifestyle can lead to CVD through hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus. Considering the role of kidney in the cardiovascular system, it is assumed that a wide variety of kidney diseases including CKD may be involved in such pathological conditions. In other words, kidney is one of the key organs to maintain good health, and from such a perspective, we decided “Kidney and Health” as the main theme of the 51st JSN annual meeting. Now, we provide a platform to present and discuss outstanding studies in this theme. Of course, other basic and clinical researches are also welcome for discussion to open a new page in nephrology.

In May, Fukuoka is in beautiful greenery of Japanese camphor trees and a fresh gentle wind from the Sea of Genkai. We hope that you will come to JSN meeting in Fukuoka and join our discussion for further development of nephrology.

I look forward to seeing you all in Fukuoka.
